What are our Community Programs?
Currently, we are focused on meeting the needs of foster children in DeKalb County. Our focus project, A Space of My Own, collects and distributes new bedding and room accessories to hundreds of children in DeKalb County foster care. At the A Space of My Own store, children exercise independence by choosing how their space will look. They shop for new comforters, sheet sets, alarm clocks, lamps, decorative pillows, posters and stuffed animals. We are currently expanding the project to more children and into more areas where we can help, such as providing books and duffle bags.
Additionally, since 1986, we have provided more than $180,000 to public school teachers across DeKalb County through our Mini-Grants for Education program.
How do we Impact the Community?
Since 1934, JLD has been a positive force in DeKalb County. We have identified and met many needs in the community. Our legacy includes many well-known non-profits and charitable organizations, such as the Callanwolde Guild, Friends of Fernbank, DeKalb Rape Crisis Center, and International Women's House. In 1980, we saved the historic Mary Gay House in Decatur from destruction. It is now our League headquarters, as well as a beautiful rental facility.
We train our members to be professional-level volunteers who can effectively and efficiently serve our community in various capacities. We can build a community program from its inception; coordinate an event or other program; and serve other organizations in leadership capacities, including service on boards of directors.
How do we Finance our Programs?
Our community programs are funded in several different ways: our fundraisers: Magnolia Market Days holiday marketplace; Giving Gala silent auction; sales of our cookbooks - Puttin' on the Peachtree and Peachtree Bouquet; sales from our Soluxe and Sweet Pea sites; contributions to our Annual Fund; rental income from the historic Mary Gay House; and receipt of corporate an
